The target audience that i would be aiming would look like these 5 men, they would enjoy a variety genres of music including rock, ie: Kings Of Leon, Stereophonics and Muse and drum&bass ie: Prodigy, Pendulum and Chase&Status. Their social aspects of life would be attending gigs/festivals that include this type of music. Their life style would be very laid back and would live in a working class economy, so the money they earn would be spent on their enjoyments, Eg: Festivals/Gigs, fashion and parties. The target audience style and fashion would be a quirky sense of style, and could be seen as an old fashioned vintage look, fashion would play a big role as it aids to the genre of music they fall into, and sets there image and group they would fall into. Eg: The rock 'rough' look would link to the drum&bass as iconic band members would dress in this fashion as well. This would all link to the stereotypical groups that people fall into. This group of men would be my ideal target audience as they show a rock/punk look and would fit in with the scene of heavy festivals/gigs and parties where our music from the music video would be played.
I have chosen this video to analyze as it is the same genre of music, Drum&Bass. Also throughout this video it shares the similar topics, such as drug and alcohol abuse and the all over point of the fast paced action that adds to the typical Drum&Bass genre which is what we aim to create in our music video.
The first part of the video is set on a man and his show ''The Patrick Chase Show'', this show is based on the famous show 'Jerry Springer', where couples/families resolve their problems and typically have a fight which creates good TV. The presenter and main character in this video, Patrick Chase is followed throughout the whole day and night, we start with an establishing shot of him in his makeup room and we see a picture of him with a wife and kids. We then follow him out into the show were we see the show beginning and him and criticizing and abusing the guests on the show about their bad habits of drug use and drinking, ''Not only does he take drugs, he uses them in front of the children'' and ''You absolutely disgust me''. After the show the switch around begins, we then follow Patrick leaving the studio and driving about whilst smoking and drinking, he also rubs his nose in a certain way as if too suggest he has taken drugs. We then see that his critism and abuse given to the guest was very hypocritical as he is doing the same as them. We see Patrick Chase go to a woman house where he has sex with this woman whilst the kids are in the room next door watching Tv, he then just leaves the woman with the kids to go out and continue with his reckless behaviour. As the night goes on we follow the main character to parties and clubs where more drinking and drug taking is involved. The night seems to get out of control when he then takes another random woman home which also involves more drug taking and drinking, he also has sex with this woman, keeping in mind that he has children and a wife still. This then proves that this man is very hypocritical. Flashbacks then appear to remind the audience of what he did the whole night, to him then crashing his car and dancing around in the street, we see him being sick and driving home in early hours to where his show is. He has his make-up and hair done all in time for him to go and present his show. His calming act and cool ways suggest to us that he has done this many times before and that he will probably do this again.
OkGo are another well known rock bad who are known more for their music videos which are enjoyable and different to most music videos that are created today. Ok Go's videos follow a simple theme which is cheap to make but time consuming, this has proved to be very effective. Their video's are created as if they are one long consecutive shot and not broken, because it is made to be a continuous shot it makes it more appealing to the audience.
Here We Go Again;
Here we go again is one of the first video that the group had done. The video appears to be one long continuous shot and is not broken. It is the same position the whole way through the video and follows the band doing a scenes of dance moves on 8 different running machines. The video lasts 3/4 minutes of just them doing the whole dance routine but because it is so simple and un-relevant to the music lyrics, it is something that draws the audience in. This video is most remember able even if it has 4 same characters, same settings, same background, same shot and same costumes/style that is all un-relatied to the lyrics and is highly effective. The video is most likely be very cheap to make and produce, but very time consuming for the band as they would have to learn the routine and practice hard to get it right, this seems to be a repetitive pattern throughout OkGo's video's.
White Knuckles
This video also appears to be one consecutive shot, this video includes a serious of movements that link on to another but involve dogs in the video. The series of events take part again, in the same location, same costume/style with the same 4 characters (the band) and same dogs and camera placed in the same position. The video is similar to 'Here We Go Again' as it is simple and original, but very time consuming for the bans as they have to work with the trained dogs for this video.
Both videos 'Here We Go Again' and 'White Knuckles' are very similar is not the same but with different events that happen in the video. The video consist of little editing and appears as one long shot. There are some exceptions to the videos of OkGo that may be slightly different.
This too Shall Pass
This video again does appear to be one long shot, including the same four characters, the same costume/clothes and a main location (a warehouse). There is a difference in this video to the others 'Here We Go Again' and 'White Knuckles' as this video had to be edited. The video 'This Too Shall Pass' consists of a sequence of connective ticks being followed a and the four characters of the band OkGo appear every so often throughout some of the sets of tricks. The set of connective tricks are set out in a ''mousetrap'' style, so that it takes the whole time of the video. Every now and then the name band appears in the tricks to keep reminding the audience of who they are, this is as OkGo normally appear in the video's for the whole period of the time. By doing this it makes the audience remember OkGo and that this is their video and of their previous success.
Arcade Fire's new music video is designed to make audience re-live there childhood memories, they do this by converging a normal music video with the internet/web 2.0 and the lyrics in the song relate to the whole feeling when watching this. By converging the two this allows the audience to see a video of there old childhood street. The audience would type there post code in too the website www.thewildernessdowntown.com, wait for it too load and then the video begins. The video follows a character running through a steet and shows various shots of the character. Other pop ups begin to pop up in the timing of the song's beat, with different parts of footage that all fits in with the miss-en-scene of the main video with the main character. After a while you see that the character is running in the area where you had entered your post code befor, the main character begins to spin around in the circle this confirms that the main character appears to be down the road where you had entered the post code befor, this is the main feature of the video and when the audience is more focused than befor because it relates to them. The video continues with the main character running away, but in a cartoon form, this relates to the lyrics of the song. The other popups begin to dissapear but one remains up, this is where it allows the audience to write a postcards to them self, and if so they can actually send it too them, this plays a big part in the whole idea of that the audience are able to reminise on there childhood memories.
After analyzing a film trailer and learning how to use the grid of nine i realized that making a film trailer is definitely not something i want to do for my final part of coursework. Instead i have chosen to do a music video, i have analyzed three music videos in minimum detail and now i am going to analyze 4 others in more detail so that i can use the details to help me when making my music video or give me inspiration to use ideas such as camera angles, different types of shots and the other all initial idea. Also by analysing a video in the same genre as my song, (Drum&Bass) it will help me see how the artists of the videos adress thier target audience, so that i will be able to do the same for the target audience i will be aiming for.
Song - Smack My Bitch Up Artist - Prodigy Director -
Story Unlike many other dance videos, this has a very clear narrative, building up to a surprise twist at the end of the video. Challenging the conventions makes this video more memorable.
Setting Set in London - Soho, which is a very typical area for clubs and that genre of music from Prodigy.
Characters The characters in this video fit in with the song as it is very heavy and crazy, which the characters appear to be in club. The people fit in with the dance music. Also you do not see the main character of the video until the end, which is the main feature of the video.
Costumes The characters in the club, mainly the girls wear very sexy costumes which is normally seen in clubs. Also the costume of the main character tells the audience that it is most likely to be a man.
Lyrics In this song the lyrics are minimal. But the few lyrics that are present do fit in with some certain incidents that happen in the video, like when people are beaten up. The lyrics 'Smack my bitch up' does have some relevance.
Special Effects There is hardly no special effects in this video, but only one trick where the main character has to be dunk. So it is shot from a point of view camera as we are not able to see the character, the camera spins and everything blurs to show the person is drunk.
Camera Angles The only camera angle that is used in this music video is the self point of view angle, where we see what the character is seeing. This is so that the audience do not expect the twist that appears at the end.
Song - The Scientist. Artist - Coldplay. Year - 2002.
Story In this video there is a clear story line told in a narrative style by Chris Martin. This is done because it allows Chris Martin to be the 'Hero' of the video and also slow and sad songs needs to have an interesting style of video to keep the audience interested.
Setting There is outdoor multiply locations, which follow the story line. This is also again to keep the audience interested in the song.
Characters Christ Martin is the main attraction of this music video to sell the band Coldplay. There is also other characters including the girlfriend, this attracts the audience because the audience likes a love interest story.
Costume Standard clothing for Chris Martin, this shows the typical style of Coldplay, and the bands image.
Lyrics The lyrics of The Scientist fit in with the video to a certain extent but not perfectly to the video, but enough for the audience to know the story line and what is happening. The lyrics of this video set the mood and pace of which the video would go, so the audience get a clear feeling from the vibe of the video.
Special effects This video was filmed once then put into reverse as the final video to show Chris Martin backtracking his day, but he sung backwards while it was filmed first time round so the lip sync would work perfectly when reversed. By doing this it adds interest and makes it more memorable as it is a slow paced song.
Camera Angles Close ups are important in this video as it is an emotional slow song, so the audience needs to see the emotion of the characters. The long shots were important when the car is falling, to show the damage, and because the car tumble did not work first time around.
Song - Buddy Holly. Artist - Weezer Director - Spike Jones
Story In this video a complex plot is not necessary. The main focus is on the band being in an episode of Happy Days. This is so the audience will remember this video and making it memorable, as the lyrics are not a key factor to this story line.
Setting There is only one setting in this video, and it is the cafe 'Arnold's' in Happy Days. This setting was chosen so it is easier to pick out and mix in the old footage and the previous footage of the band Weezer. Also as it is in the cafe it is more typical for a band to appear especially in Happy Days.
Characters The band are in the video as the audience expect it, and Weezer normally appear in their videos. Also in the video we see the cast of Happy Days, this attracts the an audience who like this programme as well as the audience you like Weezer. The characters in this video set the mood, as they are happy and enjoyable throughout most of the video.
Costume As the video is set in the episode of Happy Days, the band are wearing clothes from that time period. For example, the old wool cardigans and flare jeans, also having their hair slicked to either side fits in with the fashion style in that time period.
Lyrics The lyrics of Buddy Holly have no relevance to the music video, and they do not follow the video or tell a story. Spike Jones chooses to do this because the use of the Happy Days characters sell the band and this song
Special Effects The special effects make the video complete, as they use old footage and present footage of the band and mix them together, so it looks like the band really appeared in an episode of Happy Days. The editors was able to do this by using different layers then skillfully merging them together to create the whole scene.
Camera Angles Close ups in this video are important as it shows the bands faces and the characters faces of Happy Days. Long shots and Master shots are also very important in this video as they have to make their own shots of 'stunt doubles' so they are able to show the band and the characters of happy days together in one shot. Also the long shots and master shots show the whole scene of the band and the audience in the video enjoying themselves.
For my A2 Level Media i will be creating either have to plan and design a film trailer or a music video. I have chosen to do a music video as i think it will be more suited to my personality type and i feel more confident in making a music video as i have more knowledge on music videos than film trailers. I also i think i will enjoy making a music video more than a film trailer as you can create more of a story for a music video. The only thing i would find appealing to making a film trailer would be the element of surprise as the audience would not know what would be coming their way, but i do not think this is enough to convince me to change.
I have a few ideas that i would like to do for my music video; For my music video i would like it too be an upbeat song, so that the audience feel happier and will enjoy watching it. I would also like the video to be an older generation song, maybe set in the 70's/80's this would make the video more interesting and i like the fashion and style of the 70's/80's. By creating a video from music set in this time period i think that it will make it more unique and different which will stand out to the audience more.
