Music Video Analysis - 1. Buddy Holly, Weezer.
Song - Buddy Holly.
Artist - Weezer
Director - Spike Jones
Story
In this video a complex plot is not necessary. The main focus is on the band being in an episode of Happy Days. This is so the audience will remember this video and making it memorable, as the lyrics are not a key factor to this story line.
Setting
There is only one setting in this video, and it is the cafe 'Arnold's' in Happy Days. This setting was chosen so it is easier to pick out and mix in the old footage and the previous footage of the band Weezer. Also as it is in the cafe it is more typical for a band to appear especially in Happy Days.
Characters
The band are in the video as the audience expect it, and Weezer normally appear in their videos. Also in the video we see the cast of Happy Days, this attracts the an audience who like this programme as well as the audience you like Weezer. The characters in this video set the mood, as they are happy and enjoyable throughout most of the video.
Costume
As the video is set in the episode of Happy Days, the band are wearing clothes from that time period. For example, the old wool cardigans and flare jeans, also having their hair slicked to either side fits in with the fashion style in that time period.
Lyrics
The lyrics of Buddy Holly have no relevance to the music video, and they do not follow the video or tell a story. Spike Jones chooses to do this because the use of the Happy Days characters sell the band and this song
Special Effects
The special effects make the video complete, as they use old footage and present footage of the band and mix them together, so it looks like the band really appeared in an episode of Happy Days. The editors was able to do this by using different layers then skillfully merging them together to create the whole scene.
Camera Angles
Close ups in this video are important as it shows the bands faces and the characters faces of Happy Days. Long shots and Master shots are also very important in this video as they have to make their own shots of 'stunt doubles' so they are able to show the band and the characters of happy days together in one shot. Also the long shots and master shots show the whole scene of the band and the audience in the video enjoying themselves.
